Since 2020, the Truancy, Emergency and Safety of Schools Division (TESD) have been sustaining its CORE ROLE and TARGETED OUTPUT to “KEEP THE PEACE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF TONGA”. Every Friday prefects from both Government and Non-Government Schools conduct 2 hrs. patrolling exercise from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm around Nuku’alofa areas.

This ongoing weekly patrolling directorate participated in the After-Action Review, which culminated from the secondary school fights. All counter parties and relevant stakeholders continue to work collaboratively to ensure the safety and security of ALL students as they return home especially after Friday school days and from any related Secondary School National Events.

On the 29 the of August 2025, thirty (30) Prefects from Tonga College, Tonga High School, Tupou College and Tailulu college hurdled the patrolling service with resilience to achieve its vital purpose. The patrolling service was again under the supervision and collective efforts and commitments of the counterparties - Ministry of Tonga Police and Education Officers from TESD of the Ministry of Education and Training and Prefects and Staff from Non-Government Education Systems.

This is an ONGOING core role led by TESD and we expect more updates as such until the end of the 2025 Academic Year.

About Us

Tonga's formal education system began in 1828 with the establishment of schools by the Wesleyan Mission, preceding the widespread conversion of Tongans to Christianity. The Mission maintained control over nearly all primary education until 1882, when the government assumed responsibility for the educational system. However, in 1906, missionary organizations were again permitted to open their own schools.
